The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department is evacuating homes and businesses on South Higuera Street between Marsh Street and Elks Lane due to “significant flooding in the area,” Fire Department spokesperson James Blattler said.

Firefighters and police officers are going door to door to notify residents of the evacuation, Blattler said.

With more rain on the way, Blattler recommended that all SLO residents have a plan to evacuate if needed.

“We’re really recommending that all community members be hyper vigilant,” Blattler said.

The Fire Department is currently evacuating folks to the Marigold Shopping Center on Broad Street and the Foothill Shopping Center. This is a temporary location for people to stay in their vehicles, and city staff will be in touch with them about where to go next, Blattler said.

Blattler advised people never to cross a flooded road, noting that it only takes 12 inches of water to move a vehicle.

The Highway 101 on- and off-ramps at Marsh Street in San Luis Obispo were closed due to flooding at the Marsh Street Bridge, along with other roads in the county.
