A San Luis Obispo County school district canceled classes on Monday due to a winter rain storm that slammed into the Central Coast, bringing widespread flooding and gusting winds.
In texts and emails, San Luis Coastal Unified School District asked parents to keep kids at home during the storm. The district has campuses in Los Osos, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.
Monday was set to be the first day of classes in the new year after the winter break.
“Due to heavy rains and road closures, all schools district wide ... will be closed today,” the district wrote in a text message Monday morning. “Please do not send your students to school. We will see everyone back on campus tomorrow.”
Staff members were also not required to go to school, according to the district’s message.
“We hope to be back up and running tomorrow,” district Superintendent Eric Prater wrote in an email to the Tribune on Monday.
On Monday, sections of San Luis Obispo County saw flooding, downed trees, road closures and power outages for thousands of PG&E customers.
The storm was expected to rage on through Monday and into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
