SLO County schools to close Tuesday due to deadly storm

San Luis Obispo County public school districts have announced classes will be canceled on Tuesday due to the deadly storm that ravaged the Central Coast on Monday.

San Luis Obispo County Superintendent Jim Brescia recommended all local schools “close or modify their schedules for Tuesday” due to the “severe weather, flooding and storm surge,” he wrote in an email Monday afternoon.

One person was confirmed dead due to the storm on Monday after driving onto a flooded roadway in Avila Beach. A 5-year-old kindergarten student at Lillian Larsen Elementary School was also missing after being swept away from floodwaters in Paso Robles.

All public school districts that were back from winter break in San Luis Obispo County will be closed on Tuesday due to the weather: Lucia Mar Unified, San Luis Coastal Unified, Paso Robles Joint Unified, Templeton Unified, San Miguel Joint Union, Coast Unified, Shandon Joint Unified and Cayucos Elementary.

“The safety of our students, families and all our employees was the determining factor in remaining closed,” San Miguel Joint Union School District Superintendent Karen Grandoli wrote in an email to The Tribune.

Meanwhile, Atascadero Unified School District returns from winter break on Wednesday. Non-essential staff will work virtually from home on Tuesday “to ensure their safety,” Superintendent Tom Butler wrote in an email to The Tribune on Tuesday.

Cal Poly also canceled classes on Tuesday.

City employees taped it off Saturday when the crack was just a sliver, then as heavy rainfall, high tides and winds continued to hit the coast, the crack grew and is now “ready to fall.” #sanluisobispo #pismobeach #california #winterstorm #centralcoast ♬ Oh No - Kreepa
