Tribune’s Best: Vote for SLO County’s top athlete from April 11-17

For many San Luis Obispo County school sports, spring break interrupted the athletic action over the past week, but competition did take place for some.

It’s voting time (see poll below) for this week’s high school player of the week in San Luis Obispo County from April 11-17, and we have 10 athletes on the ballot.

Last week’s top vote-getter was San Luis Obispo baseball player Ayden Kim, who collected 7,002 votes (50%). Nipomo High baseball player Wade Arkinson tallied 2,953 votes (21%) and Wyatt Maulhardt, of Mission Prep track and field, recorded 1,942 (14%). The poll covered April 3-10.

SLO County basketball standouts recognized

Meanwhile, in the SLO County girls’ basketball player of the year reader poll, which ended Friday, three Mission Prep players topped the list of fan votes: Lillie Parish (34,575), Mary Marsalek (30,106) and Emma Boehm (30,102).

In the top boys’ basketball player of the year reader poll, Brody Naber, of Arroyo Grande, hauled in 152,910 votes to lead the list of standouts, trailed by Eagles teammates Josh McCune (112,457) and Lucas Juarez (15,514).

Separately, The Tribune’s choice for girls’ basketball player of the year was Makennah Simonson, of Nipomo. Simonson’s honor was announced along with first team and second team selections on Friday.

The Tribune’s selection for boys’ basketball player of the year was Jamar J.J. Howard, of Mission Prep, with first and second team selections released as well.

The Tribune all-stars were chosen based on stats, coach input and game observation.

Keeping it fun

Remember, the reader polls are fun, unscientific ways that you may vote as many times as you wish to support your selection for The Tribune’s Athlete of the Week.

The poll closes at midnight on Sunday. To vote again, hit refresh.

Coaches, parents or students may nominate an athlete for next week’s prep poll consideration by emailing nwilson@thetribunenews.com and providing game stats for your nominee (full player name, stats and result of game, meet or match).

Please write “Athlete of the Week nominee” in the subject line.

Have fun voting, and good luck!
