Fitness clothing retailer Aerie to close SLO location after 2 years. Here’s when

Aerie opened in San Luis Obispo in early 2021.

Aerie, the activewear and loungewear offshoot of clothing store chain American Eagle, is set to close its doors in San Luis Obispo next month.

According to employees at the store, the location in the Madonna Plaza shopping center is set to close Jan. 15.

Multiple requests for comment from the corporate office of AEO Inc., the parent company that owns both Aerie and American Eagle, on why the location will close were not returned as of Tuesday.

Aerie opened at 261 Madonna Road next to Best Buy in early 2021.

Founded in 2006 as Aerie Lingerie, the brand is now known for its yoga pants, sweatshirts, leggings, underwear and other athleisure-inspired items.

The company is also known for its commitment to not airbrush models in its advertising campaigns and to feature models of different body types to promote body positivity.

The San Luis Obispo store closure does not appear to be a part of a large-scale shuttering of Aerie locations.

In fact, the Aerie brand seems to be performing well, reporting an all-time high revenue and operating profit in the third quarter of 2022, according to a news release from AEO.

According to the release, Aerie brought in $350 million in revenue during that quarter, up 11% from the same time the previous year.

Petco closed in the same shopping center in 2021, and has since been replaced by Five Below and Party City.
