SLO County’s vote count isn’t even halfway done — 48,000 ballots still remain
The San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office has more than 48,000 ballots still to count before the primary election can be declared over.
According to an estimate released by the office Thursday, a total of 48,561 ballots remain to be processed.
That includes 48,247 vote-by-mail ballots returned on Election Day or received by the office in the mail, 295 provisional ballots and 19 that were not processed election night.
In comparison, the Clerk-Recorder’s Office counted and processed 39,777 ballots on election night — meaning the current results represent less than 50% of the final primary total.
This could significantly impact some of the closer SLO County races, including the supervisor contest for District 2 where incumbent Bruce Gibson had a 53% lead after election night but needs to stay over 50% in order to avoid going to a runoff election in November.
It could also impact the District 4 supervisor race, where Jimmy Paulding currently holds a 58.3% lead over incumbent Supervisor Lynn Compton.
The SLO County Clerk-Recorder’s Office is expected to count the remaining ballots on Friday at 9 a.m. and will release new results later that day.
