Paso Robles High School has officially hired a new principal, filling a hole left when former principal Megan Fletcher resigned after she was arrested for an alleged DUI on campus in November.

The school district announced Wednesday that former assistant principal and athletic director Mike Susank has been promoted to the principal role.

Susank served as interim principal after Fletcher was placed on leave following her Nov. 10 arrest.

The district said in a news release that Susank “provided steady guidance, fostered strong relationships with students and staff, and supported continued academic and extracurricular excellence” during his stay as interim principal.

The news release said Susank has prioritized making Paso High a physically and emotionally safe environment, encouraging growth among students and cultivating a campus culture that reinforces staff.

“Mr. Susank has demonstrated thoughtful leadership throughout his time as interim principal, earning the trust and respect of students, staff and families alike,” district Superintendent Jennifer Loftus said in the release. “His commitment to academic excellence and positive campus culture makes him exceptionally well-suited to lead Paso Robles High School forward. We are confident that under his leadership, Bearcats will continue to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.”

Before he was hired in Paso Robles in June, Susank served as the principal of Mission Prep High School in San Luis Obispo and previously taught and led in other California schools.

In the news release, Susank expressed excitement for the new role.

“I am truly honored to serve Paso Robles High School as principal and to continue working alongside our dedicated staff, supportive families and outstanding students” he said. “PRHS is a special place with a strong tradition of excellence and Bearcat pride. I look forward to building on the positive momentum we’ve created together and ensuring every student feels supported, challenged, and prepared for success beyond high school.”

Following Susank’s hire as principal, the district will open up the athletic director position to new applicants, the release said.
