If someone knocks on your door claiming to be a San Luis Obispo water employee, think twice before letting them in.

The city of SLO warned residents on Friday about a scam involving a someone impersonating city staff and telling residents their water is contaminated. A similar scam was reported in Arroyo Grande earlier this month, and then in Paso Robles as well.

According to a city news release, a SLO landlord reported that someone visited their tenant’s residence in the Madonna Road area and told them their water was contaminated. The visitor claimed to be a city water employee.

The city said there was no work being conducted at that location, and the water in the city is safe to drink.

The release reminded residents that city employees will always carry official city identification, wear city uniforms and drive marked vehicles.

““The City takes the safety of our community seriously,” utilities director Aaron Floyd said in the release. “We want to reassure residents that their water is safe and encourage everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.”

The city said it is investigating the issue, and it encouraged anyone with information to contact the SLO Police Department at 805-781-7312.

Residents who are unsure about the identity of someone claiming to work for the city should not allow the individual to enter their home, and should report the incident to the police, the release said.
