SLO County shopping center is getting a makeover. What’s up next for it?
Under new ownership, Atascadero’s Mission Oaks shopping center is scheduled for some upgrades — including some new tenants too.
Recently purchased by Nevada-based company Marin Mobile, Managing Partner David Nevin said the shopping center, which was built back in 1994 and has “great bones.”
Mission Oaks is a 7 acre plot with more than 88,000 square feet of retail space. Current businesses include Subway, Grocery Outlet, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Dollar Tree and an empty 25,000-square-foot space which used to be Big Lots.
Big Lots closed during the summer of 2024 after the company reported hundred of millions dollars of debt.
But now, the old Big Lots space is being renovated in hopes of enticing a new tenant, Nevin said.
Renovations include fresh paint, alongside stucco, dry rot and roof repairs.
“We are upgrading and making it look professional for perspective tenants,” Nevin said. “We wanted to show it off.”
The businesses of Mission Oaks are also set to get some new neighbors, including a Furniture and Mattress For Less store, which Nevin said recently opened, as well as a Wingstop, which is scheduled to open in the next month.
There are still four spaces available at Mission Oaks to rent including two 2,000 square-foot retail spaces, as well as two office spaces on the plaza’s second floor — one 1,000 square feet and the other, 2,200 square feet.
Mission Oaks shopping center is Marin Mobile’s first buy in San Luis Obispo County, formerly having owned properties in only Reno, Nevada.
Nevin said the company sold one of their Nevada properties to acquire Mission Oaks after experiencing the North County wine scene.
