Footage from SLO Black Lives Matter protest appears in new HBO Max documentary

Footage from a 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in San Luis Obispo is featured in a new HBO Max documentary.

Video of the protest can be seen “Milestone Generations,” which explores the history of Black-owned comic book company Milestone Media. The movie premiered Friday on the streaming service.

Milestone Media co-founders Denys Cowan and Dwayne McDuffie launched their comic book imprint in 1993 with publisher DC Comics.

The superhero universe they created centered an inclusive group of characters including Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ people, according to the documentary.

The comic books published by Milestone Media tackled topics including gang violence, homophobia, racism, police violence and Black sexuality — but not without push-back.

After unarmed Black man George Floyd was murdered by a Minnesota police officer in May 2020, the comic book company shifted its focus to telling stories about the Black Lives Matter movement and the power of protest, the documentary says.

The section of “Milestone Generations” features video showing protestors in downtown San Luis Obispo. Viewers can even spot an Osos Street signage.

Black Lives Matter Community Action posted about the San Luis Obispo County footage in an Instagram story Monday.

“Did you know? Footage from the 2020 protests in SLO was featured briefly in this documentary,” the story read.

“Milestone Generations” is narrated by Method Man and is available for streaming on HBO Max now.
