One Atascadero resident was killed and another badly injured in the suspected hit-and-run crash Saturday in Grover Beach.

Juli Ann Conn, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Steven Lee Stapleton, 54, sustained serious injuries, according to a news release from the Grover Beach Police Department.

Stapleton was taken to a local hospital where he is currently in the intensive care unit.

Zachary David Diaz, 20, of Arroyo Grande was arrested for allegedly driving the vehicle that struck Conn and Stapleton about 9:55 p.m. as they walked in a crosswalk, according to the department. The incident took place at Grand Avenue and Seventh Street.

Diaz allegedly fled eastbound on Grand Avenue after the crash. Police investigators were able to identify him after they were contacted early Sunday morning by several people who said they had information regarding the fatal crash.

Diaz was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run causing injury and/or death, according to the news release. He was still in custody as of Monday evening, with bail set at $50,000.

The collision is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Brad Carey at 473-4502.
