One pedestrian was killed and another was hospitalized in critical condition following a hit-and-run in the middle of a Grover Beach street Saturday night, police said.

Zachary David Diaz, 20, of Arroyo Grande was arrested for allegedly driving the vehicle that struck the two people, according to a Grover Beach Police Department news release.

An adult female who was hit by the car was pronounced dead at the scene; the other pedestrian, an adult male, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police would not release their names.

About 9:55 p.m. Saturday, police received 911 calls reporting the incident at Grand Avenue and Seventh Street, the news release said. Witnesses said the two pedestrians were walking in a crosswalk at the time of the crash, Grover Beach police Chief John Peters said.

Diaz allegedly fled eastbound on Grand Avenue after the crash. Police investigators were able to identify him after they were contacted early Sunday morning by several people who said they had information regarding the fatal crash, the news release said.

Diaz was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run causing injury and/or death, according to the news release. He was still in custody Sunday evening, with bail set at $50,000.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Grover Beach Police Department at 805-473-4511 or the San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP or www.slotips.org.
