‘Heat dome’ could bring extreme temperatures to SLO County. Here’s when, how hot

Heat advisory

Temperatures will continue to rise this weekend in San Luis Obispo County and are only expected to get hotter later next week.

According to the National Weather Service, starting Friday through Monday in SLO, temperatures will reach about mid-80 degrees.

Other coastal areas like Morro Bay are anticipated to keep a bit cooler this weekend with temperatures in the low 60s and partly cloudy skies.

Areas inland like Paso Robles were already experiencing higher temperatures of 99 degrees as of Friday that will continue throughout the weekend as well.

Later this next week, incoming clouds will turn up the heat as SLO County faces an extreme heat watch Tuesday through Thursday with higher temperatures attributed to monsoon moisture, McClatchy meteorologist Sean Macaday reported.

“Across the western and central United States, another ‘heat dome’ is beginning to take shape,” Macaday said. “A heat dome is a self-reenforcing mass of high pressure in the upper atmosphere that dominates the sky for thousands of miles. Just as a heat dome brought record-hot temps to the eastern U.S. last week, this heat dome —on our side of the country — will bring hot temps our way.”

Meanwhile, a heat advisory will continue to hang over inland San Luis Obispo County until Tuesday.

For SLO and locations closer to the water, that means high temperatures in the upper 80s. Inland, highs will be above 100 degrees.

During these times of extreme heat, the SLO County Office of Emergency Services urged residents to take simple precautions such as breaks in the shade or air conditioning, stay hydrated and check in on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
