‘Damaging waves’ of up to 25 feet could slam SLO County this week. What to expect

Waves of up to 25 feet could slam the Central Coast this week.

A high surf warning will go into effect Sunday, with surf heights expected to peak between 18 and 25 feet on Monday and Tuesday mornings, according to the National Weather Service.

The “damaging surf” could bring with it an “increased risk for coastal flooding of beach roads/parking lots during high tides” along the Central Coast and Ventura County, the agency said in a post on X.

A coastal flood advisory was also expected from 2 a.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Weather Service. According to the agency, high tides between 4 and 5 feet were expected each morning between 3 and 6 a.m.

“The risk for shallow but impactful coastal flooding is highest during these times,” the Weather Service said, “with flooded beach roads and parking lots possible, especially for the Oceano Dunes area.”

In a post Saturday afternoon, the agency additionally warned those camping at Oceano Dunes to “stay as far away from large waves as possible.”

“There will be an increased risk of beach/ motorhome flooding during times of high tide,” the Weather Service said.

Monday night through Tuesday morning pose the greatest risk for coastal flooding and high surf, it added.
