Elections

Under 40 in SLO County? The Tribune wants to hear what you care about in 2020

The election cycle is upon us.

This November, thousands of San Luis Obispo County residents will cast their votes amid a global pandemic, national protests, possible economic downturn and about a dozen other huge developments unique to this year.

Add in a presidential election and a slew of local elections that will determine the future of the county, and it’s clear 2020 will be a year for the history books.

In the midst of that, The Tribune has a simple question for you:

What do you care about, young San Luis Obispo County?

The Tribune is launching a special election project this year aimed at residents under 40 years of age. We want to know what issues you care the most about as candidates compete for your vote this fall.

The environment? Affordable housing? Coronavirus response? Whatever it is, we want to know.

The Tribune’s project, called Outspoken, will gather and amplify the concerns, questions and issues local millennials and voting-age Gen Zers care about in San Luis Obispo County. (Work in San Luis Obispo County but don’t live here? We want to hear from you too!)

The project is possible thanks to a grant from Renewing Democracy, an initiative of the Solutions Journalism Network.

Over the course of the summer, we hope to speak with you all about the future you see for the Central Coast.

We’ll then publish a Peoples’ Agenda listing these concerns in August, and distribute them to candidates for local office. We’ll ask the candidates the questions you care about. We’ll raise the ideas you present for fixing local issues. We’ll host virtual town halls and talks with experts and candidates. We’ll publish stories aimed at informing you about the very important moment we are all living through right now, and your role in shaping the county’s future.

But first we need your help.

Please fill out the Google form below to let us know what issues you care about. (Form not loading? Click here to open it in a new window.)

All answers will be used for data purposes only. Your name or identifying details won’t be published without your consent. If a reporter wishes to follow up with you on your answers, they will be in contact through email.

Don’t want to fill out the form, but do have something to say? Email Tribune reporters Kaytlyn Leslie (kleslie@thetribunenews.com) or Cassandra Garibay (cgaribay@thetribunenews.com) with your comments or questions.

We are also looking for community groups to partner with for various outreach efforts associated with the project, including Zoom town halls, listening sessions and expert talks. If you or your group are interested in partnering with The Tribune on Outspoken, please email reporter Kaytlyn Leslie at kleslie@thetribunenews.com.
