A man called 911 to report he had killed his mother in an attack witnessed by their neighbors, Pennsylvania authorities say.

Brian Rebold, 38, is now charged with first-degree murder and criminal homicide following the Sunday, Aug. 4, stabbing in Arnold, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office.

“Responding officers found the suspect’s mother, Diana Rebold, lying unresponsive in the street and bleeding profusely from her head,” the district attorney said.

The 73-year-old mother had been stabbed in the neck, back and head, police told WPXI. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the district attorney.

Brian Rebold was standing near his mother’s body, officers told TribLive.com, and was “covered in blood” when officers arrived.

He threw the knife used in the attack in a neighbor’s yard, authorities said.

A motive for the killing is unclear, but Arnold Police Chief Josh Stanga said neighbors heard the mother and son argue in the street before the incident turned violent, WTAE reported.

I’m in shock. I’m just in shock. I just haven’t been able to process this yet,” said Charisse Campise, who told WTAE she had previously seen the mother and son yelling at one another.

Brian Rebold was arrested at the scene and jailed without bail, the district attorney said.

Arnold is about a 25-mile drive northeast from Pittsburgh.
