Cal Poly spent nearly $1.2 million on St. Fratty’s Day concert, security

Cal Poly spent nearly $1.2 million on this year’s St. Fratty’s Day weekend.

That’s according to numbers provided to The Tribune by the university on May 1 after it requested the costs associated with St. Fratty’s Day through a public records request on March 18.

The numbers show all costs associated with the event as of April 24, according to the university.

According to the numbers, the university spent a total of $703,712 on its “Morning on the Green” event — the early morning music festival planned by the university to prevent the annual unruly St. Fratty’s Day street party that has plagued the neighborhoods near the university and led to vandalism and injuries in previous years.

Cal Poly’s March 15 concert drew around 6,000 students to campus and, combined with heavy policing in the area, successfully prevented the block party and resulted in reduced citations, The Tribune previously reported.

Of the total cost, $42,178 went toward concert security and $661,533 went toward the concert itself.

The university previously shared the cost of booking the two EDM acts for the concert — according to those numbers, the university spent $250,000 on ZHU and $125,000 on Galantis.

Aside from the concert, the university also spent a collective $481,490 on policing and campus response services — $386,164 went toward police and security, including lodging, while $95,325 went toward other campus response services, according to the numbers.

In total, the university spent $1,185,201 on St. Fratty’s Day, the numbers show. In contrast, the city of San Luis Obispo spent only $123,649 on its St. Fratty’s Day response, The Tribune previously reported.

According to university spokesperson Matt Lazier, the costs associated with St. Fratty’s Day were paid with money generated by “procurement activities like rebates.”

Lazier did confirm that none of the costs associated with St. Fratty’s Day were paid for with student tuition or fees.
