Paso Robles High principal resigns after DUI arrest; police report reveals details
The Paso Robles High School principal who was arrested on campus for a suspected DUI has resigned after registering a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit to drive, telling The Tribune she regrets the incident.
Megan Fletcher was arrested at the school on Nov. 10 after police said she had apparently driven there under the influence of alcohol and staff reported she appeared drunk on campus.
According to a police report obtained by The Tribune, Fletcher registered a .25 blood alcohol content at 11:12 a.m. the day of her arrest. The legal limit to drive is .08.
Fletcher was released from police custody the same day of the arrest and was immediately placed on paid administrative leave by the Paso Robles school district. A week later, she had resigned from her position.
Fletcher spoke with The Tribune about the incident Wednesday, after a police report revealed new details about the circumstances surrounding her arrest.
“I’m sad that this happened,” she said somberly. “I’m looking forward to moving forward and being the best person I could possibly be.”
Police report reveals details of former Paso Robles principal’s arrest
On Tuesday, The Tribune received a redacted version of the police report associated with the arrest after filing a public records request on Nov. 11.
According to the report, school staff had suspected for several days prior to the arrest that Fletcher had showed up to work intoxicated.
On Nov. 10, a Monday, staff noticed during a meeting that Fletcher was slurring her speech, closing her eyes and noticeably smelled of alcohol. They subsequently reported their suspicions, the report said.
The Paso Robles school resource officer, Alexandria Ellis, responded to the report after 8:30 that morning.
“When I walked into Fletcher’s closed office space, I could immediately smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage in the air,” Ellis wrote in the report.
Ellis told Fletcher she could smell alcohol, and Fletcher reportedly responded that she drank a bottle of wine the previous night and “f--ked up” by not brushing her teeth.
Ellis requested that a Paso Robles police officer report to the scene to investigate the alleged intoxication.
Fletcher told police that she drove to work from her home that morning, the report said. Police also reviewed camera footage from that morning, which showed Fletcher driving her vehicle into the parking lot and walking into the building just after 8 a.m.
During the DUI exam, Fletcher reportedly had difficulty tracking the officer’s finger with her eyes and lost balance while trying to walk in a line.
She was placed under arrest and her BAC later measured at .244 and .25 on tests at 11:09 a.m. and 11:12 a.m., respectively, the report said.
At 4:44 p.m., Fletcher’s BAC registered at .11 — still above the legal limit.
School staff screened Fletcher’s office for evidence that she had drunk on campus but did not find any alcoholic drinks, the report said. Ellis also did not see any alcohol in plain view in Fletcher’s car.
According to police, it was unlikely that Fletcher could have consumed enough alcohol on campus that morning to reach the blood alcohol levels that were measured. Police believed Fletcher had consumed alcohol prior to driving her car to work that morning.
Fletcher reportedly told police the last drink she had was around 7 p.m. the previous night, when she drank a bottle of wine.
School board approves Fletcher’s resignation
At a Nov. 18 school board meeting, the Paso Robles school board unanimously voted in closed session to accept Fletcher’s resignation.
While no name was shared during the meeting, district spokesperson Melissa Godsey confirmed to The Tribune that the approved resignation agreement was in reference to Fletcher.
On Wednesday, Fletcher told The Tribune she wants to move past the incident and requested privacy.
“I am looking forward to restarting life and finding new opportunities and spending more time with my family,” she said.
