Evacuation order issued for Cal Poly Creamery, agricultural areas due to rising flood waters

Cal Poly called for agriculture facilities to evacuate Monday due to rising flood waters and an expected reservoir breach.

“Students, faculty and staff need to evacuate from agriculture facilities, including Cal Poly Creamery, bounding Mount Bishop Road between Stenner Creek Road and Highland Drive especially those living north of Parker Ranch,” the Cal Poly Office of Emergency Services wrote in an email Monday.

“Shepard’s Reservoir is about to breach and we are evacuating the area in an abundance of caution,” the San Luis Obispo university said.

“There is no imminent threat to the campus core from this breach,” Cal Poly said.

The university said it was working to evacuate animals in the area.

Shepard’s Reservoir is on the north side of the university, near the Cal Poly Student Experimental Farm, Cal Poly Creamery and Learning Pine Arboretum.

Cal Poly recorded 2.85 inches of rain from 5 a.m. to 11:14 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Due to the severe storm, the university canceled all in-person and virtual classes on Monday, the first day of winter term.

Students and faculty were notified of the closure by email.

The university also advised people via Twitter to avoid creeks, trails and roads due flooded areas.

The National Weather Service sent a flash flood warning emergency alert to San Luis Obispo County residents just before noon Monday, warning of imminent flooding.
