High-speed DUI stop in Shandon leads to recovery of stolen property
A traffic stop for suspected drunken driving in Shandon on Tuesday morning led to two arrests after the vehicle in question was allegedly found loaded with items reported stolen from a Southern California school district.
The CHP said in a news release that traffic officers witnessed a vehicle going faster than 100 mph at about 8:40 a.m. on Highway 46 East near the Shandon rest area.
They conducted a traffic stop and found the driver, identified as Rafael Anguiano, 21, of Paso Robles, and his passenger, Atascadero resident Jamie Cunningham, 29, were both intoxicated, according to the CHP.
Inside the vehicle, officers allegedly found burglary tools, several stolen laptops, a home computer, electronic tablets, a car stereo, stolen credit cards and software that had been reported stolen from a school district in Southern California. The stolen items were also linked to reported vehicle thefts and burglaries spanning from Riverside County to San Luis Obispo County.
Anguiano and Cunningham were booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, receiving stolen property, burglary and possession of burglary tools and paraphernalia. Anguiano was additionally booked on suspicion of DUI.
Tribune archives show Anguiano was arrested in May after allegedly stabbing a man who refused to fight him and again in September after allegedly robbing a motorist at gunpoint. Court records on the status of those cases were not immediately available Wednesday.
Neither was listed as in custody as of Wednesday morning.
