Police will screen for drunk driving at a San Luis Obispo checkpoint this weekend.

On Friday, The San Luis Obispo Police Department will establish a driving under the influence and driver’s license checkpoint between the hours of 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to a news release from the city.

Friday’s DUI checkpoint location will be based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the release.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Evan Stradley said in the release. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The checkpoints are intended to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off of the road, according to the release.

Causes of impaired driving include some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that can interfere with driving along with medicinal and recreational marijuana and alcohol.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines in penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the release.

Funds for the DUI checkpoint were provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the release.
