CHP identifies 63-year-old man killed in alleged DUI car crash in SLO

California Highway Patrol identified the 63-year-old resident killed in a San Luis Obispo vehicle crash on Saturday as Stephen James Kritz.

He lived in the city of San Luis Obispo.

According to CHP, Morro Bay resident David Downs was driving eastbound on Tank Farm Road in a 2012 Chevrolet at 8:14 a.m. on Saturday. He swerved into the westbound lane and struck Kritz’s car, a 2003 Volkswagen, according to CHP Officer Chris Proper.

Kritz suffered fatal injures from the crash. Downs, 62, sustained major injuries and was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital, Proper said.

Downs was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter, Proper said.
