63-year-old man killed in early-morning car crash in SLO

A 63-year-old man was killed and another person was seriously injured in a vehicle collision in San Luis Obispo early Saturday morning.

According to a California Highway Patrol news release, CHP dispatch received a 911 call for a motor vehicle collision on Tank Farm Road around 8:14 a.m.

The collision involved two vehicles: a 2003 Volkswagen and a 2012 Chevrolet, according to the release.

The CHP said the Volkswagen was traveling westbound on Tank Farm Road when the Chevrolet crossed the opposing lane of traffic, causing a collision.

First responders found that the Chevrolet driver had sustained major injuries, while the Volkswagen driver had fatal injuries, according to the release.

The Volkswagen driver had not been identified as of early Saturday afternoon pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chevrolet — identified as David Downs, 62, of Morro Bay — was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment, according to the release.

Downs was arrested on suspicion of charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury or death, according to the release. He was not listed in San Luis Obispo County Jail custody as of early Saturday afternoon.
