The Pismo Beach Police Department arrested a man on Sunday after he allegedly loaded a gun in downtown Pismo Beach, then opened fire.

Joel Vela, 18, of Hanford was seen loading a handgun, then firing several rounds into the sand Sunday, according to an agency news release.

As the teen fired the gun, he followed a woman headed north on the beach, police said.

According to the release, Vela and the woman were arguing when she walked away.

Vela shot the gun as he followed her, police said, “to get her attention.”

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Vela was booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail on counts of possession of an undetectable firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of a concealed firearm and public intoxication, according to the release.

He was being held midday Monday in jail custody in lieu of $20,000 bail, jail records said.
