Paso Robles woman accused of murdering husband in SLO shooting held on $1.25 million bail

A Paso Robles woman charged with murder for the alleged shooting death of her husband in a San Luis Obispo apartment made her first court appearance Wednesday via Zoom.

While on a video conference arraignment with San Luis Obispo Superior Court Judge Dodie Harman from the San Luis Obispo County Jail, Skylar Marie Marshall did not enter a plea Wednesday for the alleged July 16 killing of Alexander Hagist.

Instead, Harman continued Marshall’s arraignment to Aug. 4 so that Marshall’s defense attorney has time to meet with her in person.

Attorney William Gamble told Harman that safety precautions at the jail due to positive cases of COVID-19 there have prevented him from seeing his client.

Gamble also said that he is awaiting receive results of blood tests in the case.

Marshall, 23, had been held without bail at the San Luis Obispo County Jail since her arrest.

On Wednesday, deputy district attorney Jon Kawashima motioned to increase Marshll’s bail to $1.25 million, which Gamble did not oppose and Harman granted.

Marshall, appeared from the jail in a face mask and green safety vest, spoke calmly when telling Harman that she understands the charges against her and waives time to enter a plea.

San Luis Obispo County prosecutors filed the charge late Tuesday, accusing the 23-year-old of murdering Hagist with premeditation. The charge carries a sentencing enhancement for alleged personal and intentional discharge of a firearm.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested Marshall after officers were called around 9:10 p.m. July 16 to the Peachwood Complex on the 600 block of Chorro Street.

Reporting parties described a gunshot and a woman screaming, according to a Friday police news release. Shortly after officers and fire personnel arrived on scene, they allegedly located a man with a gunshot wound.

Hagist, 35, of San Luis Obispo, succumbed to his injuries.

A watch commander on duty at the time said officers worked through the night and the investigation evolved quickly.

After follow-up interviews were conducted, investigators determined Marshall was responsible for his death, according to police.

According to Marshall’s Facebook profile, she is from Paso Robles. Hagist was from Bakersfield and had several children before meeting Marshall, according to his Facebook profile.

The two were married for about a year, according to their profiles.
