One man hits another with a metal sign after argument over trash in Morro Bay, police say

A Morro Bay man was arrested late Friday night after allegedly sneaking up behind another man on the Embarcadero and striking him in the head with a metal sign, causing serious injuries.

Morro Bay police in a news release Tuesday said that at about 10:10 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 1100 block of Embarcadero Road after a man reported he had been struck in the face with a metal sign by another man.

The alleged victim told investigators he was disposing of trash in a dumpster and saw the suspect digging through another trash container nearby.

The men became involved in a verbal argument, which ended when the victim walked away, police said. That’s when police say 49-year-old Kevin Lee Hicks of Morro Bay removed a metal sign from inside the trash receptacle, approached the victim from behind, and struck the victim on the side of the face, severely cutting the man’s ear.

Hicks allegedly fled the scene but was located nearby and arrested by officers shortly thereafter, the news release says.

He was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, possession of a controlled substance, and having outstanding warrants.

Hicks remained in jail custody Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
