A fire damaged a greenhouse in Nipomo on Tuesday night, Cal Fire said.

The fire was reported at about 6:30 p.m. on Eucalyptus Road between Scenic View Way and Via Alta Mesa.

The landowner and his son could see the flames and black smoke pouring from the greenhouse, Cal Fire spokesperson Eva Grady said.

Firefighters stretched out about 2,400 feet of hose to reach a water supply to fight the fire, she said. Emergency responders blocked off Eucalyptus Road during the response to prevent people from driving over the hose, she said.

Firefighters contained the fire to a 500-square-foot area on the end of the greenhouse — stopping the blaze from spreading to four neighboring greenhouses.

“It’s just very lucky that it wasn’t worse,” Grady said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 7:22 p.m.

The rest of the greenhouse, which is about the size of a football field, was not damaged and can continue operating, Grady said.

The Santa Maria Fire Department and the Five Cities Fire Authority supported Cal Fire’s response.
