Sewer replacement project to upend SLO County road for 6 months. See where
A San Luis Obispo County road right next to Highway 101 will be under construction for six months as an old sewer line is replaced — but traffic will remain open.
A half-mile stretch of South Frontage Road — which runs adjacent to the highway through Nipomo — between Division Street and Tefft Street will undergo road work starting in January to replace a portion of the community services district’s main wastewater artery, the district announced in a press release.
“The Nipomo Community Service District’s sewage collection system is aging and undersized in several locations,” Nipomo General Manager Ray Dienzo said in the release. “Sewage pipeline replacement projects are essential to ensure public health and protect the environment.”
The aging and under-sized pipes transport sewage water to Nipomo’s Southland Wasterwater Treatment Facility, according to the press release. A 3,100-foot portion of 10- to 12-inch diameter, 40-year-old piping will be replaced with larger pipes ranging from 15 to 18 inches in diameter.
Costing Nipomo $3.8 million, the work will take place from January to July and include bypass pumping, open-cut trenching, pipe installation and pavement restoration in the public right-of-way, the release said.
Northbound South Frontage Road will remain open to traffic during construction, but southbound traffic between Hill Street and Division Street will be detoured during the day, the press release said.
