A section of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast reopened Monday after flooding and rockfall from a strong weekend storm caused the road to close Sunday afternoon.

Highway 1 was shut down for six miles just north of Ragged Point Inn and Resort around 1:25 p.m. Sunday due to “minor rockfall” and large pools of water on the road at several locations, Caltrans District 5 said in a post on X.

Caltrans said the highway was reopened north of Ragged Point as of 12:56 p.m. after crews cleared culverts and removed debris from blocked portions of the roadway.

“Approaching the Big Sur coast from San Luis Obispo County, Hwy. 1 remains open all the way up to two miles north of Lucia,” Caltrans said on X.

However, the longstanding closure at Regent’s Slide on Highway 1 in Big Sur is still in place.

Caltrans estimates that stretch of the scenic highway will reopen by the end of March, according to the department’s website.
