A fire destroyed an outbuilding and chicken coop in rural San Luis Obispo County on Monday morning.

Cal Fire responded to a reported fire on Chimney Rock Road near Adelaida Road around 9:30 a.m.

Cal Fire spokesperson Eva Grady said workers at the property reported “everything was fine” when they arrived in the morning, but at some point while they were on the other side of the ranch, they noticed smoke.

They and neighbors called in the fire, which had consumed an outbuilding with a large chicken coop, Grady said.

“Most of the chickens have been accounted for, which is super good news,” Grady said.

As of Monday afternoon, crews were still at the scene of the fire doing “extensive overhaul” and making sure the fire was completely extinguished. Video shared by Cal Fire on X showed a smoldering ruin where the building once stood.

No injuries were reported, and there was no spread to the vegetation or main structure, Grady added.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Initial reports indicated there was no electricity to the outbuilding that could have sparked a fire, Grady said.
