Several lanes of Highway 101 over the Cuesta Grade were briefly closed Monday morning after a van caught fire in the area and blocked traffic.

According to CHP’s traffic incident report page, a vehicle fire was reported around 10:59 a.m. just south of the summit on northbound Highway 101. A white sprinter van was reportedly fully engulfed in flames on the roadside, according to the CHP page.

Both the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes were briefly shut down as emergency responders responded to the incident. As of 11:50 a.m., the No. 2 lane had reopened, according to the CHP page.

Meanwhile, the fire did spread to the nearby vegetation, burning an estimated 0.16 acres, Cal Fire said in a post on X.

The agency also warned of “significant” traffic delays due to the incident. Crews were expected to be committed to the scene for next hour, it said.

People were advised to slow down or avoid going northbound on Highway 101 over the Grade until the incident was thoroughly cleared.
