The family of the man who died in a crash off Highway 41 near Morro Bay last week was identified by his family, who are gathering donations to help pay for his funeral services and help his wife and kids.

David Winfrey, 47, was driving Highway 41 near Bear Ridge Road when he lost control of his vehicle, which plunged 350 feet down an embankment and erupted in flames on Oct. 20.

He was one month away from celebrating his 48th birthday, his brother, Samuel Winfrey, wrote on GoFundMe, and just 10 days away from moving to Kissimmee, Florida, to be closer to their father.

Winfrey is survived by his wife, 19-year-old daughter and 11-year-old daughter.

“His loss has left an unimaginable hole in our hearts, but his love, laughter and light will continue to shine through everyone who knew him,” his brother wrote.

David Winfrey was remembered as “truly one-of-kind,” “full of life” with passion and energy that could “light up any room.”

For the past five years, he lived in Morro Bay walking distance from the local farmers market, where he enjoyed shopping to support local vendors, his brother said.

“Every vendor knew him,” the GoFundMe post said. “He had a rare fit for connecting with people from all walks of life.”

Winfrey was outspoken, big-hearted and unforgettable, his brother said, adding that he had a “booming laugh,” tall frame” and “signature long curly hair.”

He was a minimalist and loved the simple joys of life, whether it was connecting with strangers or petting dogs that passed by him.

“His love for animals was incredible and another way for him to spread more of his love on this Earth,” his brother said.

His family plans to cremate Winfrey organically through an Earth soil transformation process that is environmentally friendly and allows his remains to nourish new growth and “become part of the Earth’s natural cycle he cherished so much.”

It’s a way to honor Winfrey that reflects his love for nature and spirit, his brother said.

Funds being raised in the GoFundMe will cover the costs of the cremation, the GoFundMe said. Any remaining funds will be placed in a savings account for his family.

“Your generosity, kindness and love mean more to our family than words can express,” his brother wrote. “Thank you (for) helping us honor David’s memory and support his family during this heartbreaking time.”

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the fundraiser had raised $6,645 of its $7,500 goal. To donate, visit gofund.me/b76766264.
