This summer, Circus Vargas returns to the meadow at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo from Friday, June 27, through Monday, July 14.

With its colorful tent, the circus brings high-flying stunts, gravity-defying aerialists and whimsical jugglers. A returning favorite, the Globe of Steel, features motorcyclists speeding and spinning in a steel cage.

While cheering on the acts, attendees can munch on classic circus treats like cotton candy and popcorn.

Tickets for the two-hour show — including a 20-minute intermission — range from $24 to $85, but kids under 2 qualify for free admission. For parents shopping on a budget, Circus Vargas offers a buy one, get one ticket special on opening night or 20% off of all ticket purchases for the show’s run.

Circus features all human performers, no animals

While many other circuses have faced criticism over their treatment of animals, Circus Vargas is animal-free, focusing entirely on human performers.

The family-friendly circus has set up shop in SLO each summer for around a decade, each year with a new theme. This year pays homage to Hollywood’s golden era, complete with glitzy costumes, cinematic flair and a nod to the red carpet.

“We are celebrating the circus’ place in Hollywood lure,” Circus Vargas’ ringmaster and performance director Jonathan Lee Iverson said.

“The whole show is geared to children of all ages,” Iverson said. “That has always been the charm of the circus — it’s not limited.”

Circus Vargas has toured the United States since 1969, hitting much of the California coast, including cities like Santa Barbara and San Diego. Although the themes have shifted, the performers remain at the heart of the experience, ensuring that returning families have something new to look forward to.

Before and after the show, kids can enjoy a bounce house set up near the tent. For children hoping to meet the performers, Iverson and a few of his fellow cast members stand outside of the tent after each show to answer questions, take photos and share behind-the-scenes tidbits.

Iverson has witnessed kids as young as 5 delight at the elaborate costumes or marvel at the stealthy way the crew switches around the stage.

“It is a basic need in humanity to see us overcoming or being bigger than what we think possible,” Iverson said. “That’s why people are drawn to the circus.”

Everyone in the audience will feel like they are part of the show, Iverson said. Between his singing and the comedian cracking jokes, the show feels intimate and keeps kids of all ages engaged, he said.

Iverson hopes children take away what he believes to be the purpose of the circus: “When in doubt, be yourself.”
