Early morning blaze destroys nearly all of SLO County home, injures firefighter

A home in Oceano all but burned down in an early morning fire on Monday.

At 5:22 a.m., officers received reports of a fire at a single-story home in Oceano, Five Cities Fire Authority Battalion Chief Ryan Byrd told The Tribune. The home was at 1490 16th St.

When firefighters arrived, there were “smoke and flames all throughout the residence,” and neighboring homes were immediately threatened, Byrd said.

Crews, including from Cal Fire and San Luis Obispo City Fire, worked to contain the fire quickly, but 90% of the home was lost, including everything inside, Byrd said. It took about 40 minutes for 25 firefighters to contain the fire and several more hours to fully extinguish it, Five Cities Fire said in a news release.

There were no injuries to any of the occupants, but the home’s five residents were displaced and were assisted by the Red Cross to find temporary housing, the release said.

One firefighter was transported and treated at a local hospital for a minor hand injury, the release said.

Fire crews were still on site at 8:30 a.m., hours after the fire was contained and extinguished, to conduct secondary searches and make sure the house was safe to enter.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
