Update: SLO County fire contained at 1,600 acres after burning for one day
A vegetation fire that broke out in northern San Luis Obispo County on Saturday burned for more than a day and grew to over 1,600 before it was contained on Sunday.
According to a post by the agency on X, the fire had reportedly burned 25 acres in grass near Shandon as of 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
It was located in the area of Bitterwater and Bitterwater Valley roads, Cal Fire said.
By Saturday evening, the fire, which was then being called the Bitter Fire, had ballooned to 836 acres.
According to Cal Fire, the blaze was still burning in grass and was 10% contained as of 5:06 p.m. Saturday.
Crews were facing “tough access and intense heat on the lines,” the agency said.
Later that evening, the Bitter Fire had reached 1,300 acres and was 26% contained, according to a post on X at 7:37 p.m.. Forward progress had been stopped.
“Crews continue to work hard in challenging conditions,” Cal Fire said.
The Bitter Fire was contained at 6 p.m. on Sunday at a final size of 1,651 acres, according to the emergency response app Watch Duty.
