Sheriff’s Office arrests 2 suspected of stealing from cars at SLO County trail

Two people believed to be behind a string of car burglaries on the Bob Jones Trail were arrested by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Santa Maria residents Carlin Mount, 37, and Alisha Marie Sherrell, 33, at a Santa Maria motel.

According to the release, multiple burglaries have been reported at the Bob Jones Trail parking lot on Ontario Road over the past month. This comes as the San Luis Obispo Police Department warned of similar car break-ins at local trailheads last month.

On March 3, a person returned to their car after using the Bob Jones Trail only to discover broken front and rear passenger windows and their wallet and credit cards missing, according to the release.

While speaking with deputies, the victim received an alert that one of the cards had been used at two different stores — one purchase of over $500 that was declined and another that went through for more than $300, according to the release.

Deputies were able to identify a suspect vehicle believed to be connected to burglaries at the Bob Jones Trail parking lot, according to the release.

From there, patrol deputies obtained surveillance footage of a male and female suspect from one of the burglaries, which detectives later used to identify the suspects with the help of a forensic specialist, according to the release.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects were connected to a vehicle burglary at Pismo Preserve on April 10, along with several vehicle burglaries in Nipomo during the early morning hours of April 11, according to the release.

During the arrest, deputies located stolen property linked to the Nipomo burglary, according to the release.

Mount and Sherrell were arrested on suspicion of charges of alleged burglary and identity theft and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail, according to the release.

As of Thursday, Sherrell was still in custody in lieu of posting bail, but Mount was no longer in custody, according to the San Luis Obispo County Jail’s inmate lookup page.
