SLO County teen dies after jet ski crash at Lake Shasta. ‘He will be tremendously missed’
A San Luis Obispo County teenager died after a jet ski crash on Lake Shasta over the weekend.
Dominic Lencioni, 19, was riding a jet ski with another teen when they were hit by a second jet ski, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.
Lencioni, who graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 2023 and was on the wrestling team, died of his injuries at the hospital, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said.
Arroyo Grande High School wrestling coach Kent Hubert remembered Lencioni as “kind, respectful to all ... and funny as hell,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“He was doing what he does — having a great time with friends, living life to the fullest,” Hubert wrote. “He will be tremendously missed and mourned, but he would wish us all to remember his happy nature and strive to live our lives with his joy, kindness, fun and adventure.”
Arroyo Grande teen dies in jet ski crash
At about 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Boating Safety Unit deputies responded to reports of two jet skis that crashed on Lake Shasta in Shannon Cove near Sacramento Point.
Upon arrival to the shoreline, deputies found one teenager with injuries to his chin and face and another with a knee injury, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.
Sheriff’s officials said the deputies learned the two injured teens were riding a jet ski when they were hit by another jet ski operated by a 21-year-old man, who did not require medical attention after the crash.
The deputies took the two injured teens to Bridge Bay Marina, where medics were waiting. After arriving at the marina, one of the teens, later identified as Lencioni, became unresponsive.
Sheriff’s officials said medics began immediate treatment and took the injured teens to a hospital.
Lencioni was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
After graduating from Arroyo Grande High, Lencioni attended Chico State University.
“I have coached over a thousand young men and women in wrestling over 22 years and, I say this with all sincerity, he was one of the top people I’ve been honored to work with,” Hubert wrote. “He had an ever-present, infectious smile. He asked questions. He was kind, respectful to all. He was funny as hell. He was a glue guy in the locker room. He was impossible not to love and want to be around.”
Lencioni’s family plans to set up a scholarship fund in his honor, Hubert said.
“Heaven got the best last weekend,” he added.
As of Wednesday morning, 39 people commented on the Facebook post — all sharing memories of the late teen and sending prayers to his family.
“Dominic will be missed by everyone,” one person commented. “He was such a polite and positive kid. This is so sad and devastating. He always had a smile on his face.”
