San Luis Obispo Police Department officers cited more than 70% of the people they stopped and arrested one person on suspicion of drug charges during a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation on Thursday.

The operation took place from 5 to 9 p.m. across the entire the city, the agency said. Of the 25 people who were contacted, 18 walked away with citations. Citations included stop sign violations, driving a motor vehicle in a bike lane, cell phone violations and operating a motorcycle without a helmet, police said..

One driver was arrested on suspicion of drug and drug paraphernalia possession, the agency said.

“Safety is a shared responsibility,” San Luis Obispo Police Department Sgt. Evan Stradley said. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another.”

Officers also gave out 10 bicycle lights to cyclists during the operation, the agency said.

It was the first of two safety operations to take place last week using grant money from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On Friday, the agency set up a DUI checkpoint on the 500 block of Higuera from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

That operation ended in two citations for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended/revoked license. The agency contacted 596 drivers total.
