Update: Paso Robles man dies after crash on Highway 46 West
A Paso Robles man died from a medical incident after a crash off Highway 46 West near Paso Robles on Tuesday, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.
The 70-year-old driver was not identified in the release because CHP officers need to notify his next of kin, CHP said.
The CHP said the crash occurred just before 2 p.m. when the driver, who was traveling westbound on Highway 46 West near Bethel Road in a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup, drifted into the eastbound lane, across the opposite shoulder and onto an embankment just west of Castoro Cellars.
The vehicle then continued back across the highway, over the north shoulder and down an embankment at Anderson Road in front of Tooth and Nail Winery, where it came to a stop.
An off-duty peace officer and a State Parks ranger arrived within a minute of the crash and tried assist the driver, who appeared to have suffered a medical emergency before driving off the road, the CHP said.
When Cal Fire units arrived on scene, a responding officer was already giving CPR to the driver, Cal Fire spokesperson Toni Davis said.
Emergency responders continued CPR but were unable to save the man, she said.
There was no indication that reckless driving or drug or alcohol impairment contributed to the cause of the crash, according to the CHP release.
The Templeton office of the CHP is handling the investigation.
The CHP, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks, San Luis Obispo Ambulance and Templeton Fire were also at the scene, Davis said.
