Update: Roads reopened, evacuations lifted after gas leak near downtown San Luis Obispo

The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department and Southern California Gas Co. were on the scene of a damaged three-inch gas line on South Street in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday morning.

Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, the fire department received reports of a ruptured gas line on South Street between Exposition Drive and Beebee Street. SoCal Gas was working to fix the leak.

According to SLO City Fire officials, a construction crew was working to fix a recently developed sinkhole on South Street when their equipment hit the gas line.

South Street was shut down between South Higuera Street and Exposition Drive and was closed for about two hours, according to the fire department.

People in the 300-foot radius of the leak were evacuated and those surrounding the evacuation area were told to shelter in place.

By noon, SoCal Gas had closed the leak and were inspecting the surrounding area, according to the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department.

Evacuation orders were lifted and South Street was reopened around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday.
