Man died after falling from retaining wall in SLO, police say

San Luis Obispo police and the San Luis Obispo County Coroner’s Office were investigating an apparent falling death on a sidewalk Tuesday afternoon.

Police reduced traffic along the northbound roadway of the 2800 block of South Higuera to one lane while investigators processed the scene.

A Tribune photographer saw the body of a deceased person on the sidewalk next to a roughly 13-foot retaining wall near the billboard across South Higuera Street from the San Luis Cemetery.

San Luis Obispo police Sgt. Trevor Shaloob said that witnesses told emergency personnel that they saw a man in his 50s walking atop the large wall that follows along the sidewalk. Those witnesses reported looking back and seeing the man on the ground, Shaloob said.

The man’s body has been taken into custody of the Coroner’s Office and a toxicology test will be performed, the officer said.

Officials are withholding the man’s identity pending notification of his family.
