Hwy. 154 set to reopen by Sunday evening after 6-day closure due to Cave Fire, Caltrans says
Highway 154, which was closed due to the wind-driven Camp Fire, is set to reopen by 6 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers said in a tweet.
The road will reopen after crews finish repairing guardrails that were damaged by the fire, Shivers said.
Traffic control will be in place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Shivers said. He also cautioned that motorists should reduce speed while traveling between Painted Cave Road and San Antonio Creek Road so Caltrans crews can “assess the hillside.”
The Cave Fire broke out at about 4:15 p.m. Monday along East Camino Cielo Road near Painted Cave Road, on the ridgeline east of Highway 154. The fire spurred mandatory evacuations and caused both UCSB and Santa Barbara City College to cancel classes.
On Sunday morning, Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason tweeted that crews had reached 90% containment on the Cave Fire.
