‘A rare sight.’ Snow falls on Cave Fire burn above Santa Barbara on Thanksgiving
Three days after erupting and spreading a path of destruction through the Los Padres National Forest, the Cave Fire above Santa Barbara got an unusual visitor from Mother Nature:
Snow.
Snow began falling at the 3,500-foot level of the fire footprint atop East Camina Cielo early Thanksgiving morning, Santa Barbara County Fire spokesman Mike Eliason tweeted.
“The recently charred chaparral covered in snow is a rare sight for the Santa Barbara South Coast,” he wrote.
Around 9 a.m. the snow even began falling lower than 3,500 feet, Eliason tweeted.
The Cave Fire was 70% contained as of Thursday night, according to a tweet from Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.
The acreage remains at 3,126 acres.
In a follow-up tweet Friday morning, Bertucelli warned that “smoldering material from the Cave Fire may be present for several days” and that crews will continue to mop up hot spots.
