Even with the recent rains, Daffodil Hill expected to open this weekend
Although the winter deluge has ushered in a ‘super bloom’ among California wildflowers, it also stalled the annual opening of the Amador County tourist destination Daffodil Hill. The family that runs Daffodil Hill announced Monday on Facebook that it will open for the season Saturday.
But if you’re interested, you should go soon. The McLaughlin family, who owns the Gold Rush-era ranch, warned that rain next week could take the bloom off the annual show.
“It is unknown how long this season will last as we are expecting more rain 4/2-4/7. We are only open as long as the weather allows so please check the weather forecast before visiting,” Daffodil Hill wrote on Facebook.
While much of California has enjoyed a super bloom, it’s been a slow season for daffodils.
Video posted two weeks ago to the Facebook page showed young daffodil sprouts with a few sparse yellow flowers.
On a good year – as in spring 2017 – more than 300,000 flowers can explode across the ranch’s 36 acres, drawing visitors from across the region, though remaining open for only a couple weeks before closing.
Daffodil Hill, which is home to peacocks, chickens and miniature donkeys in addition to the flowers, was purchased by the McLaughlin family in 1887. Gold Rush mining and farming equipment are on display and an original 1880s barn still stands on the ranch.

Once open for the season, it is generally open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.
