Home furnishings store has returned to SLO after closing in 2019
A home furnishings retail store has returned to San Luis Obispo, three years after the co-owners split and closed their downtown location.
Celadon House, now solely owned and operated by Kelli Thornton, has opened its new retail location at 2120 Santa Barbara Ave. between Miner’s Ace Hardware and Tileco.
“We are really happy to be back in San Luis Obispo and welcome in existing clients and new customers,” said Thornton, who is also the lead designer, in a news release. “In addition to a large collection of eco-friendly pieces, natural bedding and beautiful, solid wood furniture, our new showroom tells a unique and cohesive story so customers can visualize how items will look in their own home.”
The business had a previous location on Higuera Street that changed names and ownership when Thornton and former co-owner Cherisse Sweeney parted ways.
Business history
Thornton opened the first Celadon House store in Santa Barbara in 2001.
Then in 2014, Sweeney and Thornton launched a downtown SLO location of Celadon House together at 766 Higuera St. They operated that store jointly through 2019, before deciding to focus on separate stores of their own.
Sweeney took over the 766 Higuera St. location, renaming her solely owned business Basalt Interiors, with a focus on boutique interior design services, including sofas, sectionals, tables, lighting and unique accessories.
In 2019, Thornton opened a new Celadon House store in Santa Barbara at 1224 State St., which she solely owns, with products catering to different product offerings of home décor and furnishings.
The 1224 State St. location moved the store two doors down from the former Celadon location at 1220 State St. Thornton told the Tribune the new Santa Barbara spot offered a bigger space and to start fresh after selling off inventory from the former Santa Barbara store she had co-owned with Sweeney.
Thornton had planned to reopen in SLO after Celadon left downtown three years ago. And the new SLO location was the perfect fit, she said.
Thornton said in the release that the location has “easy access to parking and a designated loading zone for furniture.”
“If someone wants to stop in quickly, the parking (at the new SLO location) makes it easy to come in and out,” Thornton told The Tribune by phone.
Everything displayed in the showroom will be “available for immediate purchase and delivery,” a news release said.
Celadon House offerings
The store will offer “comprehensive in-house design services for commercial and residential projects, including new development and construction, space planning, color selection, custom upholstery and room design,” the release said.
Many of the products are also available online at shopceladonhouse.com.
“We offer our clients a range of home furnishing solutions tailored to their specific space and needs,” said Thornton. “From a simple update such as a sectional for their living room to an entire home, we help customers put it all together.”
The SLO store will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additionally, customers can request an appointment outside of normal business hours.
In advance of the store’s opening on Friday, the new SLO location will have an exclusive “Opening Celebration” on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
“Be one of the first to see the collection of furniture and home decor curated especially for the San Luis Obispo area,” Celadon House said in a Facebook post.
