This discount chain is opening its first SLO County store, replacing Pier 1 in Paso Robles

A discount retail chain aimed at younger shoppers will open its first San Luis Obispo County location this spring.

Five Below will open a store in Paso Robles in April, replacing the Pier 1 store that closed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new Five Below next to Dollar Tree in the shopping center on Theatre Drive, the retail chain told The Tribune in an email.

Five Below sells clothing, accessories and and other “high-quality products loved by tweens, teens and more, with extreme $1-$5 value, plus some incredible finds that go beyond $5,” the chain’s website says.

The new Paso Robles location is part of Five Below’s California expansion, the retailer told The Tribune.

Pier 1 closed all of its brick-and-mortar locations in 2020 after it couldn’t find a buyer to purchase the company because “the challenging retail environment has been significantly compounded by the profound impact of COVID-19,” a previous Tribune story said.

The chain has more than 1,000 locations in 38 states, including 59 throughout California, the retailer’s website says.

The Theatre Drive shopping center has seen several openings and closings in recent years. Prior to Pier 1’s closure, Orchard Supply Hardware in 2018 announced plans to close all of its California stores, including its Paso Robles location.

A different hardware store chain, Outdoor Supply Hardware, opened a location in the vacant Theatre Drive space in October 2020.
