A list of more than 300 businesses that have closed their San Luis Obispo locations or shut their doors permanently over the past year reveals that COVID-19 has hit nearly all local industries.
Some of the 353 companies whose business licenses expired by the end of fiscal year 2019-2020 closed before the coronavirus pandemic hit San Luis Obispo County, such as 2 Blondes Boutique. Business co-owner Camilla Hanen closed the Broad Street clothing store in conjunction with the end of her building lease in March.
Charles Shoes announced its closure in August 2019 after 53 years on Higuera Street due to e-commerce competition and the retirement of the store’s owners, sisters Cyndi Ashley and Suzette Porche. And Upper Crust Trattoria closed on Los Osos Valley Road after restaurant owners Ron & Terez Tyni chose to retire after 31 years.
But many other San Luis Obispo businesses — including East Wellbeing Spa & Tea shop and clothing stores Bambu Batu, Fiore Boutique and Jules D clothing — closed after the pandemic arrived.
License lapses also affected massage therapists, salons and beauty shops — some of the hardest hit industries during the pandemic due to the close, physical nature of their work and associated public health restrictions — along with a host of other small businesses, such as a gift shop, a bakery and a car parts store.
San Luis Obispo typically sees about 230 business closures per year. The increase demonstrates the extent of coronavirus impacts on the city’s economy, according to San Luis Obispo officials.
The city tallies 7,688 total business licenses.
Meanwhile, 150 companies have pulled San Luis Obispo business licenses since June 1, choosing to pursue new ventures despite coronavirus fears.
Those new businesses include Federico’s Mexican Food on Higuera Street; general retailer Buen Dia, which is moving into the former Bambu Bantu location on Broad Street, and Tre Fiamme Pizzeria Trattoria, opening at the old Upper Crust location.
“While some businesses are closing, others see opportunity at this time, and they’re choosing to pursue that vision,” said Brigitte Elke, San Luis Obispo finance director.
Not all the businesses that ceased operating in San Luis Obispo by the end of the fiscal year have ceased operating entirely.
Apropos clothing store, which is closing its Paso Robles location, moved to a new location in San Luis Obispo; remains open at 1021 Morro St. Meanwhile, , BoltAbout Electric Bikes discontinued its business license in San Luis Obispo but is now operating in Avila Beach, and Moroccan-themed restaurant Oasis consolidated its operations to its existing Pismo Beach eatery.
San Luis Obispo officials and other local leaders, including San Luis Obispo County Administrator Wade Horton, have urged people to shop locally to help Central Coast business owners survive, while promoting a host of economic relief resources.
To help businesses weather financial hits, the city San Luis Obispo has provided several types of assistance.
Those have included $1 million toward the OpenSLO program for outdoor dining, including parklets and outdoor seating; a fast-track tenant improvement program to help get new businesses up and running; and $260,000 in small-business grants, which were awarded in amounts of $5,000 to 52 local businesses.
