Papyrus store closing in downtown SLO as company declares bankruptcy
Downtown San Luis Obispo is losing another retailer.
Papyrus is closing its doors at 895 Higuera St., its parent company announced Jan. 23. The shop, which specializes in greeting cards, gift wrap and stationery, is one of 254 stores shuttering nationwide.
A store clerk at the San Luis Obispo Papyrus store was unable to say exactly when its last day will be, but said greeting cards and gifting items are currently 20% off.
“Schurman Retail Group wants to thank you, our wonderful customers, for so many years of loyal patronage,” the company wrote in a Jan. 23 post on Papyrus’s Facebook page. ‘Unfortunately, we regret that we are closing our stores.”
“We truly appreciate all of your business and will miss serving your needs,” the post read. “We will cherish the memories.”
Schurman Fine Papers, which also owns the American Greetings and Carlton Card store chains, filed for bankruptcy Jan. 23, the New York Times reported.
Papyrus is the latest in a series of national retailers to announce store closures in 2020.
Pier One plans to close up to 450 of its stores, including its Arroyo Grande location, and Macy’s is ditching 29 of its department stores, although the closures don’t affect the Macy’s Santa Maria.
Meanwhile, Bed Bath & Beyond is closing 40 of its stores across the United States — but the company’s stores in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo will remain open.
