Macy’s announces 29-store shutdown in 2020. Is last SLO County area shop on the list?
The first weeks of 2020 have been hard on national retail brands.
Reports from numerous media outlets surfaced Wednesday claiming department store behemoth Macy’s plans to shutter more than 2 dozen of its stores after a slow holiday season.
The Washington Post, citing a company representative, reported the company will shutter 28 Macy’s stores, as well as a Bloomingdale’s, in the coming weeks.
What about the Santa Maria Macy’s location?
The local Macy’s, which opened in the Santa Maria Town Center mall in 2006, is the only one between Santa Barbara and Monterey.
The company hasn’t released a full list of stores slated for closure, but a media representative put Central Coast fears to rest.
“I can confirm that our recent store closings announcement does not impact Macy’s Santa Maria Town Center,” Macy’s media relations director Emily Workman told The Tribune in an email Wednesday.
Macy’s operates about 680 department stores and 190 specialty stores across the United States, according to its website. It is one of the nation’s biggest retailers, with sales of almost $25 billion in 2018 and approximately 130,000 employees.
So far in California, the only confirmed closure is in the Somersville Towne Center in Antioch, according to Business Insider.
Florida will be the most impacted by the announcement, with four stores in the state confirmed to close this year, Business Insider reported.
