Napa Valley wine company buys 289-acre ranch in Paso Robles. What are its plans?

Duckhorn Porfolio, a high-profile wine company based in the Napa Valley, expanded its footprint in Central California with its latest acquisition.

Duckhorn, which is headquartered in St. Helena, manages 10 wineries and seven tasting rooms.

The company recently bought Bottom Line Ranch, a 289-acre property in the San Miguel District of the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area, according to a company news release.

The deal comes with 265 acres of drought-tolerant cabernet sauvignon grapes cultivated by Bottom Line Ranch, the release said.

“This acquisition follows our long-term strategy of supporting our wineries with robust estate holdings,” Duckhorn Portfolio CEO and president Alex Ryan said in the release. “Adding Bottom Line Ranch’s 265 acres of cabernet sauvignon to our estate program will provide us with exceptional grapes for both Decoy and Postmark, while cementing our commitment to the Central Coast.”

PJ Alviso, Duckhorn’s vice president of Central Coast wine growing, noted the cabernet sauvignon-focused vineyard’s size, location, vine age and quality.

“Bottom Line Ranch is a rare find,” Alviso said in the release. “In terms of row orientations, rootstocks and clonal selection, it has great fundamentals.”

Duckhorn Portfolio already has holdings in Central California through Calera Winery, which manages 82 acres of estate vineyards on Mt. Harlan in San Benito County, according to the release.

The Duckhorn viticulture team and vineyard manager that farm at Calera Winery will take over farming at Bottom Line Ranch, the company said.

The company plans to rename the vineyard in the coming months, according to the release.
